We Seize’d Day 1!

What a phenomenal first day. We are so excited for this show! Mr. Justus and I are amazed by this cast’s abilities already. This show will not be one to miss!

Homework tonight:

  • Watch Newsies!

    • If you have Disney + you can find the official Broadway version on there. The 1992 version is available as well but for the show purpose we think watching the stage production is best. I’m sure if you check YouTube you can find stuff as well.

  • Practice what was learned today and start memorizing all your lines & singing parts. Your children are required to be off book by next Monday for lines and songs. If they can be sooner even better!

  • Stretch before bed. These days will be long and today was already a big physical day.

  • A hot water with lemon juice and honey or even throat coat tea will be so good for your kids vocal cords over the next 3 days.

Costuming information for your children’s roles will go out tomorrow.

During pick up, please make sure that you sign your child out. I know I had a couple students run out to parents cars while I was talking to other parents, but it is our safety policy and that way we can also verbally check in with each parent at the end of the day.

Things we are still in need of:

Tons of Newspapers and by rare chance if you have 3 sheets of 11/32 in x 4ft x 8ft plywood laying around or want to donate it to us let us know, we’ll take it!

Also if any of our handy or artistic parents want to help with painting or drilling wood or PVC  pipes into wood for us this weekend let us know! We want to finish all set pieces before Monday.

We have quite a few set pieces and we are looking for parents who have any trucks and/or trailers that can help transporting sets to and from the venue.

See you all tomorrow! Do a script check in the AM before you leave!

Costuming

Below are costume inspo photos for each character and descriptions of items to get for their character. Think of the year 1899 when collecting costume pieces. We have a lot of kids double or triple casted. All costumes are needed by next Wednesday so the kids can rehearse in pieces.

ALL CAMPERS please have your basic blacks under your costumes. Bike shorts/tanks. Backstage does not have many dressing rooms and students will need to be able to change in a big room.

Goodwill and Thrift on 46 are great places to stop by if you wanna go for used & cheap locally. I know a lot of you like us like to go for the Amazon route though too. If you guys need help with links just let us know.

For all our male presenting characters we would like the Shoes across the board to be black jazz shoes or black jazz boots (canvas or leather).

If your child is playing a female presenting character such as Katherine, Medda, Ethel, Olive, Ada, Dorothy, woman or Hannah we would like them to wear black character shoes with low heel, black character boots, or black Jazz boot.

Links for shoe examples, the website discount dance & dancewear solutions  has dance shoes for cheap as well if Amazon doesn’t have your child’s size.!

We made it through hump day! Day 3

Another 30 pages blocked and choreographed.

Your kids are gonna need a good dinner and maybe a foot rub. I know I need one hahaha

Really impressed by everyone’s work ethic. We can’t wait for everything to come  fully together next week.

Homework:

Practice everything that has been blocked and attempt all singing parts with performance tracks.

Practice Videos for Seize The Day Part 1 & 2 , part 2 dance break and The world will know are up along with the others from Monday and Tuesday. Giuliana, Ezra, Teresa , Windsor, Arya, Jackson, Ellie, and Kennedy need to especially practice all dance breaks and tricks tonight.

We are having a set building, painting, and prop organizing session Saturday morning at 8am and will hopefully be done latest 12pm. If any parent wants to come help out we will gladly take yah. Kids can come but will need something to keep them busy. As we only want adults handling stuff. Parents with drills, saws, screws, nails or a tool box, or extra paint bring whatever yah got.

Main point of focus will be:

•Spray painting pvc pipes and benches. •Painting plywood to look like brick. •Painting canvas’s with scenery and making Strike Signs.

•Sanding and drilling wood pallets together.

•Making prop piles

Reminder please make sure your kids come in sneakers and bring jazz shoes if they have them. No crocs or slides allowed.

If you got any questions hit us up or speak to us in the AM.

We’ll see everyone in the AM!

I will not be here till 10am but Mr. Justus & Mindy will be here to warm the kids up till I get here. Have a good night!

Week 1 is done!

This week has been fantastic and we are so proud of your kids!

We are blocked to page 87. So 20 more pages on Monday and then cleaning the show till Friday.

Your kids homework this weekend is to just practice practice practice and get off book. Please see link for tracks and video.

Monday morning your kids are taking headshots. Have them wear a bright colored plain shirtqwith no logos and if the girls want to do their hair and makeup they can.

All costumes are needed by Wednesday.

If your child already has jazz shoes they will be wearing please have them bring them Monday.

We are at Lochwood Monday - Wednesday and then at the performance space Thursday & Friday.

7.28.25 - The show is blocked!

Headshots are taken!

Now we go on to cleaning this show for Friday’s performances. We are so proud of each of our campers.

Today we started individual check ins so we can support and give special time to each of our child. This is a moment where we check in with them on their wins and struggles with material, plus see where they are at emotionally. We will be doing this everyday leading up to the show. If your child voices any problems in those areas to you, please encourage them to tell us during these moments.

Homework this week:

It’s imperative that each of our campers are spending 30mins at a minimum practicing each night. Those final details truly come together from that extra work at home. A lot of our cast still needs to get off book in the final scenes (pg 80 and on) Also all dance numbers need to be reviewed with video.

Some of the choreography was changed for the ending of King of New York so please make sure if your camper is in the number they review the new video.

Vocal & Sinus care this week:

  • Hot water with lemon juice and honey.

  • Drink at least 3 glasses of water before bed.

  • Humidifiers at night

  • Nasal saline spray

  • Avoid dairy and too many sugary items.

  • 8hrs of sleep

Wednesday night we will be moving props after camp. If we have any parents that could help us lift sets & props onto the uhaul and off at the performance location please let us know. We’ll be loading up during pick up and heading to the location at 5pm. So roughly time wise we need help 4:15pm to 6pm. You are more than welcome to bring your child’s costume that evening to the performance location as well, so that it’s one less thing Thursday & Friday morning to worry about. We suggest that your camper brings all their stuff in a laundry basket so that their items stay organized.

Now a message from our musical director, Mr. Justus:
Hey everyone! This week we have new tracks for four different songs. These tracks are specifically for Ensemble Parts 1 and 2. Students should have marked in their score which part they are.The following songs are:
And the World Will Know
Carrying the Banner
Once and for All
Seize the Day (2)For each song there is a track for Part 1, Part 2, and both parts together. I strongly encourage listening to your individual part track first. They have been recorded in the higher register as well for more clarity and accuracy. Please listen, sing along, and have a wonderful week 2 of Newsies!

If you have any questions just hit us up or speak to us in the AM.

-Shana Parrott, Mr. Justus and The Lochwood Staff

7.31.25 Communication!

Families what a day! I can’t believe the shows are tomorrow. Your kids deserve a big meal tonight, a hug and a big sleep cause today was a lot and they were rockstars through it all. We had a pretty good tech run but we didn’t get a full dress rehearsal. With that being said please try and get your child here early tomorrow. You can drop them off as early as 8:30am. We’d love to get two run thrus tomorrow before shows if possible or even 1.5 run thrus.

Just a house keeping/ behavior note, we had quite a few kids touching other peoples stuff. Please talk with your child about not touching our friends’ things.

Other than that all kids need to just run through their stuff one more time. We don’t want them to push themselves too much tonight but everyone needs a refresher before tomorrow for sure.

Reminders for tomorrow:

  • Drop off is 8:45am and the kids stay until the end of the 2nd show.

  • Again, no refrigerator or microwave tomorrow

  • We will have dinner after the first show around 4:30pm of Little Ceasars Pizza. We have Cheese or Pepperoni. If your camper needs a different dinner, please have that arranged to be brought at the end of the first show.

  • Shows are at 3pm and 6:30pm.

  • Tickets are $10 each cash or card tap

Also if you are available after the second show to help with loading and unloading the truck to transfer sets back to the studio please let us know in the AM as we will need that muscle again. Please let your camper know after the show they will also need to help with cleaning up the backstage. We are all in this together. The more hands, the faster the cleanup gets done.

Thank you all so much!

We’ll see you in the AM.
